Academy graduate Ryan Porteous in action during his debut season

Porto Hits 100!

01 September 2021

There were so many things to celebrate over our win against Livingston; supporters being back in their own seats, remaining top of the cinch Premiership, another three points, and for Ryan Porteous… making his 100th appearance in a Hibernian shirt.

Growing up a Hibee, Porto watched many of his heroes in the famous green and white jersey and is now on his way to becoming one of them.

It’s easy to forget that he’s still at the tender age of 22 due to his mainstay in the first team and his leadership on the pitch, but Saturday’s game was a special one for our 2016 Academy graduate.

His debut was back in 2017 in the Scottish League Cup group stages against Montrose, before he really announced himself on the scene with a brace against Arbroath (below) in the same competition.

He’s now developed into a really cultured ball-playing centre-half, who is a big presence both on and off the pitch.

His fellow centre-half, Paul Hanlon, has gone on to make 468 appearances for the club after coming through the Academy.

For now, Saturday’s game will be sure to stay in Porto's mind for a long time.

“A few people have told me not to underestimate the achievement,” said the defender.

“It’s a big deal for someone to play 100 games especially when I have missed about a year with injury if you add them up.

“I’m not too sure how many were good games! But I have loved it. It’s something I always wanted to do. Even when I was injured, I was thinking I want to get to 50 games, then 100 games and now that I’m here I want more.

“If we keep winning games, it makes it even better.”

The win over Livingston also sits us top of the cinch Premiership going into the first international break, which nicely tees up the Edinburgh Derby in two weeks’ time.

“It’s a game we will both want to come quick because we are in good form. It’s not often you’ll see this derby as a top of the table clash. But derbies are always must win games. Every time. And we look forward to it.”
